All singers whether they are those extremely talented ones or ones just singing their very first song, must perform certain vocal training exercises. This is to prevent any injuries and also to excel as a better singer. You can truly expand your voice and surprise yourself in realizing what a great singer you may already be.
Check Your Posture and Relax
The first of the vocal training exercise is to always check your own posture. The reason your posture is so important is because it directly effects the tone of your voice as well as your stage presence. If you do not stand or sit with good posture while you are singing you will be forcing notes out rather then the notes flowing out in a more natural way.
Many feel if they hold their breath or suck their tummies in they will have better success, but this is far from the truth. You should not pull in your stomach muscles as it will be more challenging to sing and you will not be able to hold your notes as long as if you would leave your stomach relaxed. Next you should always warm up your voice before singing with a few of the phrases that encourage a lot of movement in your voice and also force you to emphasize various syllables and noises.
Stretching And Smiling
Stretching your head, neck and shoulders out briefly before you perform and even when you practice singing is a great idea. You will need to be relaxed to be at your best singing level and when you are very tense from work or school your body is the first place that takes the blunt of your day. Always sing with your chin up and try to smile when you are practicing singing as well. When you sing with a sad depression on your face or when you are not opening your mouth up enough to get the proper notes out, it will show in your performance. It changes the entire tone of your voice. Try it at home and speak with your mouth in a normal position and then say the same phrase with a smile on your face and you will clearly notice a vast distinction.
Common Practice Phrases
The normal vocal training exercises to become a better singer are the ones where you repeat various phrases such as “mommy made me mash my m and m’s” things such as those and the doe rae me fa so la ti doe are also a common favorite. They may seem a bit silly at first, but they are what your voice needs to expand and to warm up effectively. Drink plenty of water before and after your singing routine as well to keep your throat hydrated and to avoid hoarseness. A good number of people also participate in gargling before a performance and also before their singing practice lessons as well. This can loosen up anything stuck in the throat and give you a more clear sounding tone. Work closely with your vocal coach and practice as much as possible on your voice training exercises at home.
